Breaktime/Mealtime

Hunger is proven to effect scholastic performance and behavior in school children creating a rippling effect on entire classrooms and communities. The Breaktime/Mealtime program makes a real difference in children's lives by helping to insure that no child suffers from lack of food during school breaks. Breaktime/Mealtime provides nutritious breakfast and lunch food items for low-income families whose children are enrolled in Head Start, Free or Reduced Price Lunch programs, to compensate for food they would normally receive while school is in session. Included in the box, students receive nutritious food, a cash voucher to buy fresh produce, bread, milk, etc. and a menu of suggested meal ideas. Overlake Service League offers food to every qualified student in the Bellevue School District. Working with the Bellevue School District our volunteers packed and distributed almost 27,000 boxes of food during the 09-10 school year.

Breaktime/Mealtime applications are sent home with over 17,000 students at the beginning of the school year, allowing eligible families to sign up for food over their winter, mid-winter and spring school breaks. In addition, applications can be requested year-round at the administrative offices of Bellevue Public Schools, Family Connection Centers, and Bellevue School District Head Start offices.
